Obesidade aumenta risco de complicações da nova gripe, alertam especialistas

A obesidade é um fator de risco para complicações clínicas da gripe A (H1N1) ? popularmente conhecida como gripe suína ?, apontou um estudo do Centro de Controle e Prevenção de Doenças dos EUA (CDC, na sigla em inglês). Segundo o órgão, o número de obesos é mais alto entre os casos graves da doença no país. Além disso, pessoas com doenças cardíacas, deficiências imunológicas e diabetes também correm mais risco, se contaminadas.

O CDC analisou pacientes hospitalizados com a gripe A na Califórnia durante o mês de maio, e concluiu que a obesidade está entre os fatores que aumentam as chances de os infectados apresentarem complicações médicas mais graves. A epidemiologista responsável pelo estudo, Anne Shuchat, declarou ao jornal Washington Post que ficou surpresa com a quantidade de pacientes obesos entre o número dos casos de gripe A considerados graves.

“A prevalência dessa patologia está sendo notada especialmente entre estudantes e pessoas jovens. Quando esses pacientes são bem nutridos e previamente saudáveis, a doença costuma evoluir de forma benigna, com a evolução clínica bastante semelhante às gripes que todos conhecemos”, explica o médico nutrólogo Nataniel Viuniski, da Associação Brasileira de Nutrologia. “A obesidade é um grave fator de risco tanto para a saúde individual como para a saúde pública”, completa.
